How to Shape a One-Day Seattle Visit

For one day in Seattle, keep the plan focused: choose one North Seattle stop for the morning, then spend the afternoon at Seattle Center.

Woodland Park Zoo is about a 5-minute drive from Marco Polo Motel, making it a nearby option to start with. Allow at least two hours for a general overview, then leave the rest of the day for the city center and Seattle Center.

Seattle Center’s campus is open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., though individual attractions and organizations set their own hours. The campus was built for the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair, the Century 21 Exposition. Use its listed attractions to choose a manageable focus rather than trying to fit every venue into one afternoon.

Morning: Choose a North Seattle Stop

MorningChoose a North Seattle Stop

Woodland Park Zoo is a straightforward morning choice from the north end of the city. Its guidance recommends allowing at least two hours for a general overview, so plan the visit around that minimum and keep the rest of the morning flexible. For more on planning the stop, see this Woodland Park Zoo visiting guide.

The zoo is open daily, but hours vary by season and may also change on special-event days and holidays. Admission tickets are available only online. Full-price general-admission tickets purchased at least four days ahead receive a 10% discount, which cannot be combined with other discounts.

Before you go: check the official site before you go for Woodland Park Zoo hours and ticket details.

MiddayTravel into the City

For the trip toward downtown, Seattle’s Link light rail 1 Line serves Northgate, Roosevelt, the University of Washington and downtown Seattle. Trains run seven days a week, with service every 8, 10 or 15 minutes depending on the time of day.

The schedule runs from about 5 a.m. to midnight Monday through Saturday, and from 6 a.m. to midnight on Sundays and holidays. Check the live schedule and alerts with Sound Transit before travelling.

If you’re comparing ways to get around, this Seattle public transport guide covers the city’s transit options. For Seattle Center, the campus is served by several Metro routes, including routes 1, 2, 4, 8, 13, 24, 29, 31 and 33, as well as the RapidRide D Line.

The RapidRide E Line and routes 5 and 28 serve the Center along Aurora Avenue North. King County Metro’s trip planner can help you plan a bus journey.

Afternoon: Focus on Seattle Center

AfternoonFocus on Seattle Center

Seattle Center is at 305 Harrison Street. Once there, choose a couple of stops that suit the time you have: its attractions include the Space Needle, International Fountain, Artists at Play, Climate Pledge Arena, Chihuly Garden and Glass, Gates Foundation Discovery Center and Seattle Center Skate Plaza. You can find more planning details in this Seattle Center visitor guide.

The Space Needle was built for the 1962 World’s Fair. It has two observation decks, including a revolving glass floor and open-air glass benches. For a no-cost stop, Artists at Play is a free playground for all ages. The International Fountain’s music starts at 10 a.m. and ends at 9 p.m. when the fountain is operating.

To connect Seattle Center with downtown, the Seattle Center Monorail runs between the campus and Westlake Center. It departs approximately every 10 minutes and takes about three minutes each way.

One-way fares are $4 for adults ages 19–64, $2 for youth ages 6–18 and reduced-rate riders, and free for children under 5; round-trip fares are twice the one-way price. Tickets are sold online and at vending machines at both stations. The Monorail has ADA-compliant boarding gates and two designated wheelchair positions on each train.

EveningAllow Time for the Return Trip

Keep your evening plan flexible around the return journey. The Link 1 Line’s service hours vary by day, while the Monorail is open daily and extends service for Seattle Center and Climate Pledge Arena events. If you plan to use either, check Sound Transit’s live schedule and alerts and confirm event-related Monorail service with its operator.

Campus hours don’t guarantee that every Seattle Center venue is open for the same length of time. Before settling on an evening stop, check that attraction or organization’s hours and any event-day changes. That leaves room to choose a final Seattle Center visit that fits the day without relying on a single venue’s schedule.
